Last night Mike and I went out to grab a bite to eat. No more contractions as I had the day before so we thought we’d take advantage of one more night sans baby and go and have a delicious dinner. Our selection of restaurant? The Common House. It’s a really cute place right around the corner from the house.
So we’re sitting there waiting for our drink order to be taken and I said to Mike…. "You have a thread hanging from your button. Don’t pull it." What happens next? Within literally a nano-second, Mike reaches down, pulls the thread and off flies the button.
The look on his face was priceless. It was like he was a little kid who, no matter what his parents said, really needed to experience this for himself. Forget the forewarning he was given not to touch it. I, of course, immediately start laughing hysterically. What a dummy!
Did he not realize if he pulled it the button would go flying? Of course he did. Did he want to defy my request and yank on the button thread anyway? Of course he did!
Between the two of us rolling in laughter we had to have a chat about how we behaved as kids – Did we never listen to our parents? Were we too stubborn to listen to directions? Did we have to experience things for ourselves before they really sank in? YES to all of the above.
Are we in a lot of trouble once Baby Vail arrives? Will she act just like her parents who only sometimes listened and instead did as they wanted? Will she push our buttons (had to say it) just to show us she can do as she pleases? YES to all of the above!
I have a feeling both the Vails and the Reeds are getting a good chuckle out of this!

False Alarm or Dry Run?
Last night I had contractions for about 45 minutes. They were on and off, and completely irregular so nothing that we could even track (with Mike’s sweet “Contractions” iPhone app). Because we didn’t actually leave the house, I’ll categorize this exercise as a 'Dry Run' since technically a 'False Alarm' would have meant that we drove to the hospital and were later rejected. Ok, 'Dry Run' it is.
The contractions were pretty weird. In a sick, sort of sadistic way, it’s reoccurring pain you welcome because that means a baby could be coming soon. Then the flip side is …wait, does this mean the baby is coming soon?? And are these contractions going to quickly get MUCH worse??
Obviously nothing came of the contractions baby-wise – and although uncomfortable, I was by no means approaching labor status. Regardless, I will tell you, we learned a lot. I thought we were ready. We have our bags packed, have the camera purchased and packed, “My Breast Friend” and “The Boppy” are packed. We’re ready!
But really, we’re not. Our bags are upstairs and not even zipped up. I was even sporting something that I want to bring to the hospital at the time of said contractions. We haven’t set up the litter box for the cat (our super awesome indoor/outdoor cat only needs a litter box if we leave him for a couple of days and he can’t go outside to go potty). We also have things lying all over the house that we use daily but ideally, we’d like to have with us in the hospital.
Ok, so a new To-Do list has been created. It’s short, don’t worry. Today when we get home from work we’re going to bring our bags downstairs and set them by the front door. We’re going to start a pile of items on the dining room table that we still use but would like to come with us (easy access so we can continue using them but return them to the table for “d-day”). I’ll set a bag there as well for easy retrieval. Also, I went to Target and got our snack bag packed – this bag will also live by the front door. And we’ll get the litter box set up and put up on a shelf somewhere ready to be placed on the floor for the kitty if a mad dash is in order.
I’m sure we’re missing something and of course, life will go on. But since we’ve got nothing but time on our side here, I’ll continue with my Type A personality (soon to be Type B with this “completely out of your control” exercise I’m going through) and find things we need to do pre-baby. I hope she comes SOON! Otherwise Mike is going to kill me. Love you, honey!
Happy Friday!

Preggers Progress Report
I just got home from my weekly Drs appt. and I went from last weeks "Well, nothing to report with your cervix" to.... drum roll please ...."Sorry, again, nothing to report with your cervix." Really?? Bummer. But, what can you do?
The Dr. did mention that most "first timers", as he categorized me, average 5 days post due date for delivery. Quick math in my head.... "Really, so June 11th?" But as was shared with me today, there is a full moon on June 7th so maybe that will be the day. There seems to be some truth to the 'full moon theory.' And, I'll take June 7th over the 11th!
So as the Dr. said, "I'll see you next week here in the office unless we see each other sooner in the hospital." At the rate I'm going, feels like we'll see each other again at the office. Next appt is June 3rd.

New York Times Magazine Etsy.com Plug
Honestly, you'd think I work there. Anyway, cool plug for the awesome "all things handmade" Web site found in this weekend's New York Times Magazine.
...POINTS OF ENTRY: THIS WEEK’S RECOMMENDATIONS HANDMADE: Etsy.com, a huge online crafts fair, offers toys, graduation gifts, wedding dresses and zillions of other things, all handmade. Arguably, you’re saving money because — no, it’s just spending. But Etsy offers beautiful things. For ideas about what to buy there, or how to make your own stuff, see also Threadbanger.com, the fantastic site for people who make their own clothes.

Destination Maternity Alert
A little bit of advice for pregnant women in the area, beware of Destination Maternity.
I hate to slander a local business (or I guess this is libel because it’s written) but there are a few things about this store I feel I must share to help out the rest of us preggers around town.
Really the bottom line, Destination Maternity is a nightmare. And sadly, it’s basically the only thing we have going here. Yes, it’s similar to Babies ‘R Us in that it’s running a monopoly on all of us preggers. You can try to find maternity clothes at Target or one of the local department stores but basically if you looking for a big selection that runs the gamut in pricing, Destination Maternity is where you’ll end up.
Initially I thought, how great. One store where I can get everything from designer jeans to cheap jeans to bras to diaper bags to dresses – all for the protruding. Perfect. Sign me up. Since that discovery, I’ve frequented Destination Maternity – remember, they have a monopoly going so you basically have to go there – and you know what, each time the experience leaves little to be desired.
Gripe number 1. The sales associates are very pushy. Sometimes you’ll luck out with a great sales associate who will let you do your thing and not be in your way but most often, you’re attacked at the front door and then hounded as you float around trying to do a little shopping. Yesterday was a great example. I went there to buy nursing bras. I’ve talked to plenty of “soon to be moms” and those “whose milk has already come in” and I know what I’m signing up for here. Although embarrassingly immense in girth, I knew the size I was looking for and I was ready to make a purchase. What happens instead? I’m attacked by a sales associate who basically told me that not only do I not know what I’m doing, but that I’m actually wearing the wrong bra size at the very moment I stood there talking to her. Are you serious?? For the record, the bra I was wearing fit me perfectly and I guess for her sake, I didn’t fit into the perfect “pregnancy boob mold” that I believe she has us all fit into. As she said… “by now, you should have grown to X cup size and XX around the back.” My response? “Ok, well, my back fat isn’t puffing out over the top of my bra so can we move along here?”
Gripe number 2. You can not return anything to Destination Maternity for your money back. As the receipt says in very fine print that you have to actually initial before you’re allowed to even leave the store – you have 10 days to return something to the store (and what you are able to return is, of course, limited) and you will only get store credit. What a screaming deal and super convenient. Thanks Destination Maternity. Love that part of the monopoly business plan.
Gripe number 3. This goes for all stores really but since I’m on a roll here, I’ll keep my rant going. Hey, Destination Maternity, back away from the florescent lights in the dressing rooms. I’m literally the size of a house right now. And I’m trying on bras that could cover the front of my car. Could you tone down the lighting a little and at least try to implement one tiny measure to make my shopping experience with you a pleasant one? What about a dimmer in the dressing room? Great idea! Nope. Instead, you have these make shift dressing rooms with a “door” made out of a curtain that barely closes with people like the “bra attacking sales associate” right outside the “door” barking at me to see if I need a bigger size. “I’m fine, barking sales associate. I think this size is PLENTY big. Thanks.”
I could continue on and get more catty and describe other annoyances but since it’s the only game in town, I’ll let you check out the store on your own. I hope you have a pleasant experience. I did actually have 1 so it’s not to say it won’t happen again. I guess after it’s all said and done, it’s really an interesting science experiment where raging pregnancy hormones meet monopoly store associates. Sadly they win in this situation but I will say, it’s fun to argue, get sassy and release some of your tension so have fun during your next Destination Maternity trip!

Huge to-do list
The count down is on for Baby Vail’s arrival and I feel like we still have a lot to accomplish. We have time but it doesn’t feel like enough time and who knows if she’ll be early, late or possibly even on time.
I’ve heard so many stories that first babies often arrive late. So I tried to do some digging but to no avail. There doesn’t seem to be any data out there showing average early/late or on time stats for newborns, which I think is strange. That should be very easy to track and I wonder if I’m not looking into the right places or if hospitals and OB offices just don’t monitor it.
Anyway, so not to leave us all hanging – here’s an interesting nugget of info – especially for Kimmy, who lives in Colorado and is due with babes number 2 in early September. “Babies born at higher altitudes are about three times as likely to be born small for their age as babies at low altitudes.” How lucky are you??
But since I’m like an inch above sea level, I’ll be in the “large, and likely late” category for Miss Baby Vail.
And the to do list
Babies 'R Us returns
Car seats in both cars
Make and freeze meals
Target - incidentals
New camera purchase
Pack hospital bag
Ikea - I just need to go there. I'm sure they have awesome things for the nursery:)
...And I'm sure I'm forgetting something!

PSA - the price of stamps has gone up again!
While listening to the radio on my ride into work today, I discovered that the price of stamps has gone up yet again. Now we’re looking at $.44 per stamp. I’m announcing this to all because ...A) it’s annoying that stamps have gone up another time! (third time in three years and all in the month of May!) ...and B) I’m in the midst of writing several thank you cards to all of our dear friends and family and I’m glad I caught this announcement prior to another batch going out in today’s mail.
There’s my own personal public service announcement. If you own a book of $.42 stamps, you best be heading to the post office today (much like myself) to shell out for some 2-centers to get these letters moving.
Oh, but if you were smart enough or informed by the postal office to purchase "forever" stamps, you're in the clear. I, on the other hand, was JUST at the post office last week to purchase 2 books of stamps and OF COURSE was not informed of the pending price increase or the fact that buying "forever" stamps would be a swell idea. The freaking USPS! Agh!

The 20's - Happy Mother's Day!
Holy cow - are we really hitting the 20's?? Wow. 29 days to go. That's crazy!
The weekend is filled with getting the nursery ready (bedding is in route - I actually have a USPS tracking number to prove it). I need to wash all of her sheets, blankets and clothes. Mike is going to get the car seats in place and we may make a Babies 'R Us run to return a few duplicates. The Babies 'R Us trip may wait though. That place is crazy on the weekends and I'm not sure I'm up for it.
So at the dentist today, the hygienist asked me if I was celebrating Mother's Day this year. My response – “Yes we are! My mom lives here and so we're going to her house to make dinner.” (Mom - you have to let me know what you want:).
Well, she had already asked when my due date was by this point in the appointment and so she quickly discovered that Mike would be celebrating his first Father's Day (June 21, 2009) before I'll be able to enjoy my first Mother's Day and "that wasn't fair" since I've been doing all of the work for the last 36 weeks.
Enough said. Mike, who was a few dental hygienists down the hall, was quickly informed of this revelation and so now I've officially decided that I too am a mom - even though my nugget is peaceful and quiet and fully enjoying aquatic life inside of my belly. Fair? Not really. But it should be a fun weekend anyway!
Happy Mother’s Day!

Charlotte Shower
Hats off to Corinna and John for hosting a wonderful baby shower for us this weekend in Charlotte. We can't thank you enough for all that you did!! The decorations, the sweets, the snacks and beverages, the gifts....the list goes on and on and we are sooooo thankful! You literally brought 3/4 of your kitchen here from Raleigh and hosted one of the most spectacular baby showers and we're forever grateful!
And, many, many thanks to Debbie and Graham who came and helped out tremedously! Mike and I are beyond lucky to have you all in our lives. Soon Baby Vail will have many aunts and uncles that she will love as much as we do. We love you guys!!!
Also, many thanks for all of our friends and family that came to celebrate the arrival of the nugget. Thanks for all of your generous gifts; Mike and I are truly touched by the continued out-pouring of love and support! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had the best afternoon with you all and am so glad you could make it!
