Wheels on the bus....

Here's one good side of daycare (which I think there are several so don't get me wrong...).  Today Eloise shared with us her new found skill of singing.  All morning and now into the afternoon she's been repeating, "Wheels on the bus go round and round. Wheels on the bus go round and round. Wheels on the bus go round and round."  She has yet to move on to another portion of the song but I have to say, I'm quite impressed that she picked this up from school and does it completely unaided.  We used to sing around here but her tone-deaf mom probably made the musical pastime unappealing.  Well, now with her teachers rocking it out each day, she's a full blown star. Baby American Idol here we come! (no, I'm not a stage mom.)

The not so good side of daycare (aside from what I've already mentioned about her not eating or sleeping...) is the picture of Eloise they sent home on Friday with the following note underneath: "It's getting better. Don't worry. I will be happy soon."  Yes, the picture is of an extremely miserable Eloise who looks as if she just finished crying long enough for someone to snap a pic. Note to daycare staff: You may want to send some of the kids home without pictures from time to time. It's ok. We won't mind.

But let's end on a happy note...."Wheels on the bus go round and round."

Ch ch changes

So the Vail ladies are going through some changes as of late. My lack of blogging (in addition to my lens issue) has been due to the fact that I am a working girl again and Miss Eloise is now a daycare kid.  I started on Valentine's Day (I hope a good omen, right? I will love my job. I will love my job.) and therefore, so did she.

Do you want the good news or the bad news first?  The good news? Ok. I love my job. It's great to be back in action and I guess the real conclusion of it all is I'm a working girl at heart. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love and cherish every single moment I had with Eloise as she was t-tiny up until 20 months old. And if this job wasn't such a great opportunity, maybe I would have kept on staying at home with her as I was but nonetheless, I was presented with a pretty great communications position at Wells Fargo and so a working girl I am. An Uptown working girl at that.

The bad news....Eloise is not adjusting to daycare. It's only been 2 weeks so of course it'll take more time but the poor little thing. She's just not doing well. It absolutely breaks my heart.  On top of catching all of the germs from the other kids, having a pretty good cough and a snotty nose since day 1, she doesn't nap there, some days goes without eating and when we go and pick her up you'd think she was a hostage victim - as displayed by her running to the door screaming "bye bye bye, go, go, go, out, out, out." It's a scene. And luckily none of her wonderful teachers take in personally.  I'm just hoping for a faster adjustment period but I know realistically it's going to be awhile before she jumps out of my arms and runs to her friends to play.  Drop-offs and pick-ups are tough but the teachers are great. They help by immediately scooping Eloise up and taking her off to play. And after a day full of activities with all of her new friends, she's a zombie when I go and pick her up.

So I do apologize for being so incommunicado. The camera thing does annoy me, I'll be frank. And as of now, I'm just plain being cheap and haven't ordered another one.  So not having pics to show and also now not really having a lot of time, my blog is paying the price.  But I don't want it to. This isn't a sign of disinterest. I will keep this blog going. I will!

Ok, so that's the scoop.  Ch ch changes for the Vail ladies. I love my job and Eloise will love daycare. Fingers crossed on the latter:)

Ella - weez

So yes, I know I stuck my daughter with a "difficult to pronounce" name (at least for a youngster) but you know the history here. I have forever loved the name Eloise as it was my grandmother's name and it's my mom's middle name. A great family pedigree backs it up, that's right.

Well, Miss Eloise is now all about talking in the 1st person and calling herself my her own name.... Ella-Weez, as she says it. It could not sound cuter coming out of her mouth. Each time I hear her say it, I smile.

You can probably see where this is going. Yes, I'll admit, I'm now at the point where I say (a lot), "What's your name?"  "Ella - weez", she says.  "Why don't you tell the nice lady what your name is?"  "Ella - weez," she says.  "Who am I?"  ...."Mommy."  "Who are you?"  ...."Ella - weez."  Ahhhhh! I love you sweet little Ella - weez! You melt my heart daily:)

Camera diagnosis

What do you want first....the good news or the bad news?  The camera has been in to see the Dr. and I have the diagnosis. The good news - it's not the camera. The camera is perfectly fine, including the battery.  Well, that's a relief. The bad news....it's the lens. The standard Nikon D40 - el-cheap-o lens it came with went on to camera-lens-heaven.  And to replace it - by buying another Nikon D40 el-cheap-o lens - will run us anywhere from $150-$200.  So although it's cheap in quality, it's not cheap in price.  And it's the standard, run of the mill lens, so as you can imagine, if we want to replace it with anything worth it's weight, the price goes up from there. Sigh. Alas, you continue being the faithful fan of a photo-less blog. Thanks for that. I appreciate it:)

Cupid's Cup and Winter Flight

I ran in the Cupid's Cup 5K this morning and the Winter Flight 8K a few weeks ago so I'll use today's post to update on both. I totally forgot to even mention the 8K. It was in Salisbury on January 29. My goal was to get under 35 minutes and I finished feeling really strong with a 34:01 (6:50 per mile pace).  I was 5th overall female and 1st in my age group.

Today's 5K was a speedy race. My goal was to break 20 minutes - one of my 2011 goals. And I finished huffing and puffing and nearly vomiting (so I truly know I could not have gone any faster today) with a 19:42 (6:21 per mile pace).  God, 5Ks are SOOOO hard. To me they are like a 3.1 mile sprint. Certainly not my forte. I'd rather log some miles than run fast any day.  Nonetheless, I'm really pleased with how today's race went. It was hard but it was good for me. I was the 7th overall female (after literally watching numbers 4, 5 and 6 pass me in the last 3/4 to 1/2 mile. Ugh.) and 2nd in my age group.

I'm definitely psyched with how both of these races turned out. For whatever reason, I've been feeling really strong lately. My weekly mileage has stayed consistent. I've thrown in some speed workouts and together it seems to be a good recipe. I just hope I can keep it up!  Stay tuned for my next race.

(glad this post is all done because I looked over and just caught Eloise putting a hand full of dirt into her mouth from a plant. ahhh!!)

Airplane kisses

Eloise is a little obsessed with airplanes so we've created a nightly ritual where we go outside just before bedtime to do a little plane spotting.  All throughout the day Eloise recites, "airplanes. night time. airplanes. night time." And so when it finally gets dark enough, we go out on the front walkway and watch for planes to go by.

She's quite the spotter, I must say. She catches sight of them often before I do. (we have a little competition of who can find one first:) And when she sees them, she wants them to be a "big one. airplanes. night time. big one."  Of course it needs to be a big plane. They are the only fun ones, you see.

Well we just went outside to find some planes and Eloise found the first one.  We typically wave to the planes and say "bye bye airplane." But tonight Eloise threw in a little extra love. It must be because Valentine's Day is right around the corner.  Completely unprompted by me, she said, "bye bye airplane" and then put her hand up to her mouth and blew it a big Monkey kiss.  Airplane kisses. Melt my heart again little girl.

Missed photo-op moments

Dozens of photo-op moments are flashing by me at rapid speed. I'll be frank. It sucks.  I'm taking the camera to the camera doctor on Friday.  Sigh. Anyway, I missed another op today and so I thought I'd do my best to describe it.

I had to get a Recall fixed on my car so I was gone this morning while the Baby Whisperer was here. When I got home I was greeted by this....

One super cute Monkey dressed in the following:

Recipe:
1 Turquoise and white flowered long-sleeve shirt.
1 Pair of white, hot pink, yellow and turquoise striped leggings.
1 Dark denim mini-skirt over the leggings.
1 Pair of white and hot pink Pumas.
And a paper crown with glitter hearts glued on it that she made in art class yesterday.

Baking instructions:
No need to bake. Just leave her at room temperature. Throw in a super "proud of herself" smile and we've got one delicious Monkey ready for a Mommy nibble. I could just EAT her up!

Friday's update

I hate to say it but the camera is officially broken.  My replacement battery made it yesterday, I charged it up, popped it in and........................it still doesn't work. Ugh! I'm going to find a local repair place for my one last ditch effort but sadly, I may need to buy a new camera in the near future. What a serious bummer. And we didn't have that camera for very long!  I actually know exactly how old it is because we got it when I was pregnant and basically right before Eloise arrived. So it's 20 months old. That's terrible.

So with no camera comes no pictures. That's pretty much a good thing for this week because my child is "that" kid you see at the grocery story or library with a giant brush-burn running the entire length of her nose - from tip to bridge - after faceplanting on the concrete driveway this week. Awful.  She actually faired well and didn't seem to mind the trail of blood streaminig down her face. I, on the other hand, was completely mortified. And here we are 5 days later and it still looks pretty rough. As proven by each of the places we go and someone says, "Uh oh, looks like someone fell down."  Or they say, "I was afraid to say something in case that was a birth mark but it looks like she fell down, right? Poor thing."  Uh, yeah. She fell down. And thanks for making this situation worse than it is. Sigh.

Speaking of the concrete faceplant, we officially call Eloise Tumbelina courtesy of the Baby Whisperer. Eloise tumbles her way through her day as she bounces off of walls, floors, steps and the like falling right and left. Sometimes you wonder if she spends more time on all fours than on her feet but for whatever reason - this age or her lack of grace - she is our little Tumbelina. With a brush-burn nose to show for it.

This weekend is our turn for hosting the neighborhood supper club. We're expecting 8 couples to come here tomorrow night at 7pm. We are in charge of the "main course" and all the others bring everything else. I tried to get creative with our "month" and so I came up with a "Super Bowl Supper Club" theme and asked everyone to bring something delicious indigenous of the home town of their favorite football team or where they grew up.  Mike and I are making Beef on Weck - thanks to Grandma and Grandpa Vail special mailing us 3 dozen kummelweck rolls from western NY and then also a few crockpots full of chili. We wanted to do chicken wings, for the obvious reason, but we aren't that good at making them and we haven't found a local place that matches Buffalo's delicious flappers. Anyway, Eloise will be here - hopefully sleeping through the entire party. With 18 people total, this is going to be interesting. I'm thinking she'll slumber right through it. Let's hope.

One other update for now - Miss Eloise and I are on a full-on battle of wills. Daily, or I should say hourly, she is testing her limits around here and if I stick to it, she's not getting her way. I'm assuming it's this age, and also her highly spirited, and extremely strong will power, plus add in some inherited stubborness and we've got a full on war around here. She's a good kid but I'll tell you, she is really, really testing me.  As displayed at the grocery store today in the deli section. I'm trying to order the roast beef for said Beef on Weck sandwiches and all of a sudden Eloise starts screaming. (her new thing when Mommy has any sort of grown-up conversation) I turn to her and she immediately stops. I tell her to stop it, be nice and use her inside voice.  I turn back to the woman helping me and Eloise immediately starts screaming again. Repeat the above about 3 times and I swear I thought the police were going to escourt us out of the store.  Sans beef.  That little girl is something else. Ahhhhhh!!! I did my best to get her preoccupied with something else but obviously I have some serious work to do in this area.  Oh, the joys of parenthood.

That's it for now. Have a great weekend! Go Steelers!!!

Here's a forewarning

If you let your driver's license expire longer than 1 year, you will be made to take the vision test, the road sign test, the computerized test (where you can only miss 5 of 25 questions) and then alas, you will find yourself cruising around the neighborhood near the DMV doing a driving test with a DMV employee sitting next to you - clipboard in hand and all - telling you where to go.

Ah yes, Allison realized her license was expired last October - exactly 10 months after it actually expired - and did nothing about it until today, Ground Hog's Day. I see no irony in the fact that it's 2/2/2011 as I will not be repeating today's early morning activities at the DMV ever again. I pledge that to myself at a minimum.

Nonetheless, I can officially say I only missed 4 of 25 questions on the computerized exam (even after not preparing but I will admit, I was nervous and starting to sweat. that test is no joke.), I breezed through the vision and road sign tests and did a 3-point turn like a champ (exactly 20 years after taking my first driving test with said DMV employee in tow).

I am again an official licensed driver in the state of North Carolina.  At least for the next 7 years when I will indeed get my license renewed prior to expiration. Please let my avoidance of the DMV be a forewarning to you all. It's not worth waiting.
